Summary: What is a family? This is the fundamental question posed by Zach Wahls' testimony given here. This testimony was given to the Iowa House Judiciary Committee about House Joint Resolution 6, which proposed amending the Iowa Constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman. In his testimony, Wahls argues "the sense of family comes from the commitment we make to each other, to work through the hard times so we can enjoy the good ones; it comes from the love that binds us." He notes that in discussions about gay marriage, the question often comes up about whether or not gay parents can successfully raise a child. Citing several of his own impressive accomplishments, he argues that clearly is not an issue. Instead, the issue around gay marriage is discrimination. Wahls states you are "voting for the first time in the history of our state to codify discrimination into our constitution"; "you are telling Iowans that some among you are second class citizens who do not have the right to marry the person you love." Viewers themselves can be encouraged to consider what defines family? How does the state define family, and how do these definitions have consequences for existing families? What does it mean to view family as an institution within a sociological perspective? Viewers may also consider the broader history of discrimination encoded in laws, from race and ethnicity, to gender and sexuality. This can also be put in the broader national context of the fight for marriage equality, as demonstrated in this clip, which shows a conservative defending marriage equality from common conservative critiques.

Seriously, I don't know who is making whatever it is "about whether or not "gay parents" can successfully raise a child" because how many "heterosexual parents" have/has or can successfully raise a child?

Who is saying who is a second rate citizen? By the way this person chose to word it, well of course. But then again, it is those who have chose to live a different way (regardless of whether they are right or wrong AND regardless of whether the opposing group is right or wrong) than set forth in our Constitution, so those of the heterosexual group (since someone chose to change things) could counter by defending that it is them who are being treated as second rate citizens when they have done nothing except support and uphold it's Constitution.

When things were taught in a certain way, without making a point about things that have no bearing on anything good. I did not get taught anything about specifics to choosing the sex of my future partner(s).

We were told what we needed to know, like as a girl, I was taught about my body and what happens when males and females have intercourse together. We were not taught things which would lead us anywhere, whether it be toward a choice between being or choosing to be heterosexual or homosexual.

YET, I knew that male/female, male/male, and female/female relationships existed. No, I do not believe that because they did not teach about homosexuality, they were lying or hiding anything anymore than they were lying/hiding anything by not teaching us about heterosexuality. Some things don't need to be "taught" because we simply have the capability of discovering those things for ourselves.

BUT NOW, with the way things have become and all this B.S., there are issues because people are putting their two cents into it. I not only blame those who thought it was something everyone should learn....before you start listen the whole way without thought of what you think I mean....I also blame those who have abused their power by abusing people who are not like them! YOU AIN'T THE DADDY OR MOMMY!!

If you are the mommy and daddy, then be the mommy and daddy, having problems at home....do your job. I am not speaking to you directly or tell you what to do. You already do or should know how to do it already, right? Or seeking help if needed....so good.

But if you the mommy and daddy teaching your child to hate and hurt others without their beliefs; then be prepared to stand in judgement before/by/with your child because you have taken that stand.

Anyways, if God be for you, you will overcome with Jesus. God bless. :)
